Rubenesque beauties
Early portrayals of the artistic nude often referred to Biblical stores or mythology. Between 1597 and 1600, Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) painted this image of Adam and Eve. Rubens’ paintings convey the concepts of fertility, desire, physical beauty, temptation, and virtue, as perfectly captured in this design. His images of full-figured women are widely recognized in Western art history, so much that terms such as “Rubenesque” have been coined.
Rising from the waters
Up until the late 19th century, artists like William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905) painted in a very formal, academic style that followed centuries of painting tradition. Having studied in both Italy and France, the French artist attracted a large following with his allegorical works. His work is best described as highly finished and impeccably realistic with a hint of sentimentality. Evening Mood was painted in 1882 and can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba.
Impressionist classic
French Impressionist Pierre-August Renoir (1841–1919) painted Blonde Bather about a year before Bouguereau’s Evening Mood. Despite being created around the same period, both painters show two drastically different styles. Renoir’s bather, modeled after future wife Aline Charigot, is curvier. More importantly, Renoir’s rendition and use of color and texture are more raw, seemingly unpolished, and more modern. Blonde Bather highlights the Impressionist movement that would later dominate French painting at the end of the 19th century.
Cubist planes
Three Womenby Spanish artist extraordinaire Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) vaguely reminds us of Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, which was painted at around the same time. The former was painted from about 1907–1908, and its colors more earthy, natural, and muted. Geometric shapes
Cosimo “Mino” Lo Savio is a self-taught Italian artist whose canvases evoke Cubism. Lo Savio’s work, however, is more figurative and representational than conceptual. Painted in 1999, Nudo Di Donna Addormentata(Nude of a Sleeping Woman) features a nude figure resting on a white sheet with earthen-colored jars in the upper left corner of the zig-zagging background.
Perfect pair

Tribute to a master
Tiziano Vecellio (1488/90–1576), or Titian, as he is known in English, was a Venetian Renaissance painter. His name is often used to describe the brown-orange hair of his figures. Mosaicist Eileen McDonough, however, pays homage to the master by alluding to the reclining pose of her figure. Ode to Titianpays reference to two paintings: Dresden Venus, of which Titian painted the landscape circa 1510–1511, and Venus of Urbino,which Titian completed in 1534. Titian’s artistic composition would later inspire other iconic paintings such as Edouard Manet’s Olympia.
Minimalist form
