As long as art has existed, so have its critics; thus came the age-old divide between abstract and realistic art, which is always a hot potato in conversations. Classic, realistic art has always been reinforced with huge admiration and revered throughout history. In the days where phone cameras were not available at a mere pockets distance, people needed something else to seal memories of loved ones and cherished places. Realistic art was NECESSARY, and many painters practice their hyper-realism skills solely to deliver portrait paintings, landscapes and scientific sketches on commission.

Times have changed, and the past 100 years has allowed us to snap up memories at the touch of a button…There is now a lot of room to play with what “art” really means.

Abstract art often consists of a range of shapes, colors, and textures that represent ideas in a cryptic, un-obvious way, allowing the viewer to interpret the piece in their own way. There is often more room for interpretation in abstract art as it can mean vastly different things to different viewers. Here are some examples of abstract mosaic artwork:

This inspired abstract tree holds intricately spiraled white wires, giving a hypnotically ethereal aesthetic. The vibe of this contemporary mosaic art is almost spiritual and sacred.
Turning emotion into imagery, these layered displays of glass, bead, and tile take the eyes on a journey inwards, where feelings are better communicated through the eyes than the ears. Estate: La strada delle farfalle, Copyright © Giulio Menossi
This kitchen mosaic backsplash is far from plain. Bold geometric lines combine with tentacle-esque black decals.

Isn’t the human eye, imagination, and creativity wondrous things? A few well-placed tiles can tell our brain so much! A stunning spiral contemporary abstract mosaic, Copyright © Vincenzo Greco

Realistic art is still very well-beloved today, many artists enjoy maintaining old traditional mediums, while others take a fresh approach to the ancient mastery of photo-realism.

This parrot is comprised of both paint and mosaic artwork, flooded with brilliant color and those realistic, beady eyes.
Andrew Bisdale captures the intensity of human expression using only single dots of color. This contemporary mosaic artwork effect brings another dimension to what would otherwise be a striking, yet normal portrait. Mosaic Artwork, Copyright © Andrew Bisdale
The grandeur of this architecture is not reduced by its mosaic form.

Of course, some artists choose to meet realism, abstract and mosaic art right in the middle! Creating an incredible fusion of old and new;

While you can very much tell this is a cat, the abstract shapes and fragmented visuals provide this kitty with something extra. Just look at those eyes! Mosaic Artwork, Copyright © Lucy Langlois
