2020 has been one long, long, LONG year…I mean, at this point it seems that we’ve been ordering take-out and wearing masks for three years. However, 2021 is about to slay this dumpster fire of a year we’re still in, so the least we can do is give 2020 our own little nudge over the cliff, and what better way to do that than by talking about some good trends that came in 2020 and that are here to stay for the time being.

1. RIP Minimalism

So it turned out that one of the ways this pandemic played into our lives is by bringing the consumer-nature of the modern world to its peak, and by default — making maximalism cool again. Needless to say, as someone who has an urge to puke and have a nervous attack whenever I see a half-empty white room, I couldn’t be happier about it. I mean, it’s 2020. If maximalism is that one good thing that happened this year, I’ll take it.

2. Kitchen islands made a come-back

This one completely useless trend made a quiet come back to the scene and, to be perfectly honest, I don’t mind it. People seem to be getting kitchen islands again because they started making food and having breakfasts and brunches together again. If a massive, ugly, and unnecessary block of furniture is what it takes to keep that new habit alive, so be it.

3. Monochromatic style by a radioactive spider

Once upon a time in a boring land far, far away monochromatic interior meant 50 shades of grey — but in a dull way (omg, I’m rhyming! Rap bars all over this place my guy!) Then 2020 came and we started spending more time at home and, lo and behold, we got sick and tired of muted hues everywhere. So monochromatic has a totally different look these days. 2020/2021 monochromatic is bold, strong, and sometimes even neon.

4. 2020’s chainsaw massacre of the artificial materials

Uh huh, we killed it dude. No plastic-fantastic! Décor made of natural materials is nowhere to stay. Next year will be all about gorgeous natural mosaic art and lush house plants. 2020 taught us to bring the outdoor in.

5. Traditional needed a twist

I bet you didn’t even know your good ole blue bathroom needed a fun and colorful mosaic backsplash until 2020 came, right? But now that it is slowly ending and you are tired of your not-so-good ole house interior, you are starting to realize everything could use an edge. 2021 will embrace those tiny feel-good twists we made this year and it will make them larger than life.
