The holidays are almost here folks! Today we will learn some stuff about Santa Claus and show how the legend of jolly ole fella who brings shiny toys to good boys and girls on Christmas Eve ties in with mosaic art. We will also explain how we at Mosaics Lab are the Santa of the 21st century, but we’ll get to that…
So, the legend of Santa can be traced back to sometime around 280 A.D. when a monk named St. Nicholas walked the land of Patara in modern-day Turkey. He was widely admired for his immeasurable kindness and piety and he gave away all of his inherited wealth to help the poor and the sick. He became the subject of many legends, with one of the most famous beings about the three poor sisters he saved from being sold into prostitution and slavery by their dad. (uh-huh, like reading the crime news section of the Daily Telegraph) St. Nicholas provided them with a dowry and they eventually got married and lived happily ever after.
So (*insert a single hand-clapping emoji here), needless to say, the legend just kept spreading from there. Today, Santa Klaus or Kris Kringle already has a long and colorful history steeped into Christmas traditions in cultures all over the world. Coca-Cola Santa you meet in shopping malls and see on TV screens throughout December doesn’t have much in common with the Santa from hundreds of years ago, but both of them have a lot in common with us.
First of all, just like Santa we are bringing joy to homes all over the world, just unlike with Santa, with us the joy of mosaic artwork is there to stay.
