Popular Interior Design Styles That Won’t Age Well

We are all aware that interior design trends are constantly changing. Sometimes they are evolving and other times they are…rolling downward until they become obsolete. Either way, one thing is certain, your modern home interior is at the mercy of this ever-changing process. What’s popular this year could be easily thrown away as trash by the critics next year. Just ask mumble rappers…

Needless to say, interior design trends are very hard to predict, as well as their longevity. Would you believe me if I told you that beaded curtains and carpeted bathrooms were all the rage once upon a time? Imagine carpeting your lovely bathroom mosaic floor one of these days. Oh, the blasphemy!

On that note, experts are always trying to predict which trends will flop quickly and which are here to stay. We have our top five shooting stars here and it’s our estimate that they will gloriously disappear within a year or so. Let’s hope we’ll never see them again…

NEON PLASTIC

So this particular trend came to be due to the all-consuming ’90s nostalgia movement that’s been going on for the past two years. We already met it, had a whirlwind romance with it, we let it have its way with us, and it left us feeling kinda disgusted with ourselves… Why did we want it back? Beats me. It’s like watching a car crash. You know it’s gonna be awful, but you just can’t look away. Don’t get me wrong. If you are up for some neon fun times, go for it. However, don’t throw all of your savings on a lime green neon plastic designer piece expecting it to last for years.

MILLENNIAL PINK

As much as I do understand the mood-boosting qualities of wearing pink, I don’t think that this trend of pink on pink will age well. In fact, I think it will die screaming. I mean, if this was a horror movie, a busty girlfriend wearing pink would be the first to go. However, this is not a movie, and this ridiculous trend that has been going on since 2017 keeps prevailing. However, I don’t care how many pink faux fur and cowboy hats Lil Nas X pushes, and how many pink bell bottom pants Gigi Hadid wears, this ridiculous trend just has to become boring and die eventually.

MARBLE KITCHENS

Marble has been a surefire hit in kitchens for ages now, but its undisputed reign is coming to an end. Not that marble is getting a bad rep or anything, but there are just too many materials out there at the moment. Soap-stone, granite, quartz, ceramic tiles, laminates, etc. are all terrific options and all have their pros and cons. Marble will likely never completely die down as a kitchen material, but its monopoly over kitchens is definitely being compromised more and more as time goes by.

Sophisticated and classy, but maybe it’s been present in our kitchens for too long?… Image source: Link.

WACKY SCULPTURAL FURNITURE

Wacky and weird-looking furniture trends are the answer to this nostalgia craze that’s been going on everywhere. From the movie industry and the flood of coming-of-age movies, through remixes of good ole songs we forgot about, to rounded mint-green refrigerators and boucle everything, previous decades seem to be coming back with a twist. Needless to say, we’ve seen these odd furnishings come and go once and we will certainly see them go again.

I don’t care how popular it gets, it will always look like a poop emoji…Image source: Link.

TV-CENTRIC LIVING ROOMS

The pandemic had us all binge-watching our favorite TV shows to seemingly no end. Is it strange that we are becoming a bit sick of our TVs? It is to be expected. Not to mention that they are also spoiling every single design style with their boring look. So, I predict we’ll be seeing more and more non-centric rooms. Mosaic artwork here, a painting there, but not a huge TV to ruin the stylish vibe.

So, these are just some of the trends that have truly taken the stage these past couple of years, but it’s safe to say that they will dwindle down or go away with a bang pretty soon. It is highly unlikely you’ll see a poop-emoji-looking Terrazza sofa or neon pink plastic shelves anywhere in ten years.
